(WRIC) — As kids head back to class, so do the germs! Many parents and teachers refer to it as the ‘back-to-school plague.’

On average, elementary school children get up to 12 colds or cases of the flu each school year… But there are ways to keep your little scholars healthy!

First, make sure to avoid the water fountain. Have your child bring their own water bottles to school and ask them not to share with anyone.

Make sure your student is using hand sanitizer, too, especially before eating their lunch. Cafeteria trays can be a prime habitat for nasty germs.

Finally, make sure your child gets enough rest to keep the immune system healthy. Sleep experts say ten to 11 hours of sleep a night is the best.
