AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – An armed man has been apprehended after a standoff with police overnight in Amelia County.

A Virginia State Police trooper was dispatched to a home in the 10000-block of Mattoax Lane around 8 p.m. Wednesday for a call that a man with a gun was threatening to kill himself.

The man’s wife and daughter safely left the home after they were unable to calm him down. Neighbors were told to stay in the homes was the man was on the loose.

As soon as the trooper arrived, the man inside the home started shooting at the trooper. The trooper waited for backup while the man ran into the woods.

Virginia State Police troopers, the State Police Tactical Team and members of the Amelia County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene to conduct a ground search.

“It was a good collaborative effort between Amelia County and ourselves. We had our helicopter here as well and everybody worked well together,” said Sgt. Steve Vick. “It came to a peaceful resolution, and that’s what we wanted to happen.”

The man was apprehended around 11:20 p.m. Police identified him as 46-year-old Christopher M. Coffey of Amelia. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

He is being held at Piedmont Regional Jail without bond.
