RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The security guard involved in an altercation last Friday at VCU Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care building that left a Henrico man dead has been suspended.
64-year-old Phillip Whitaker, Jr. was pronounced dead on Sunday, August 9, after he was injured during an altercation with a contract security guard working at VCU Medical Center, police said.
The security guard worked for a company called L.E.W. & Associates, located on Westwood Avenue in Richmond. The company released a statement on Friday, a week after the altercation took place, saying in full:
“We are devastated by the accident that occurred at VCU Ambulatory Care. The security guard involved has been suspended pending the results of the police investigation, and we are cooperating fully with the police as they conclude their investigation. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Whitaker.”
Police said they discovered Whitaker unconscious on the floor with a serious head injury when they arrived on scene last Friday. VCU Police contacted Richmond Police after a doctor determined Whitaker’s injuries were life-threatening.
“Never thought Dad would go to pick up his prescription and not come back,” one of Whitaker’s daughters told 8News after the incident.
Police have asked that anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation call Major Crimes Detective Michael Gouldman at (804) 646-3915 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens may also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
