Smoke alarm helps three escape house fire in Church Hill

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A working smoke alarm helped save the lives of three people Friday afternoon, according to Lieutenant Chris Armstrong with Richmond Fire and EMS.

Lt. Armstrong said crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from a residential duplex structure after responding to a house fire in the 800 block of North 24th Street in Richmond’s Church Hill shortly after 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.

After conducting an aggressive interior attack, crews were able to determine that the fire started downstairs.

According to Lt. Armstrong, the smoke alarm woke one of the occupants who was able to grab her 2-year-old daughter and alert their neighbor. All three exited the home safely.

The mother and daughter were hospitalized as a precaution. Lt. Armstrong said no injuries or burns were reported.
