RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – George Brown, Jr. was indicted Wednesday on one count of manslaughter stemming from the Aug. 7 incident where 64-year-old Phillip Whitaker, Jr. was found unconscious at the Ambulatory Care Center at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.
When VCU Police officers were called to the ACC Pharmacy on Aug. 7, they discovered Whitaker unconscious on the floor with a serious head injury. VCU Police contacted the Richmond Police Department once the doctor determined Whitaker’s injuries were life-threatening.
Whitaker died two days later.
According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office, the 67-year-old Brown has yet to turn himself in to Richmond Police.
“He destroyed our lives,” said Whitaker’s daughter, Tammy Harris. “He took our father away from us over a very senseless act that should’ve never happened. He should’ve never put his hands on our father.”
Harris and Whitaker’s other children are now questioning the way in which their father’s death was handled.
“It was brought to our attention that the security guard has ties to Richmond Police,” said Harris. “We believe this connection may be allowing our father’s killer to walk freely, turning himself in at his own leisure before the bond hearing tomorrow rather than being arrested after (Wednesday’s) indictment.”
Police said Brown may have posted preliminary bond in magistrate court or demonstrated credibility that he would appear at his circuit court hearing on August 21.

Brown, a security guard at the pharmacy, was employed by LEW & Associates. On Thursday, the company released the following statement:
“As a result of the findings of the police investigation, LEW & Associates has terminated George Brown Jr.’s employment. We remain devastated by Mr. Whitaker’s death and continue to hold his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
As questions surrounding Whitaker’s death build, his daughters say they want brown to pay the consequences.
“(We want) him behind bars, him locked up, him not being able to walk the streets and turn himself in,” said Harris.
