RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The message from Richmond Kickers head coach Leigh Cowlishaw all week was crystal clear. “We’re fighting for our playoff lives.”

Going on to claim Saturday’s match at City Stadium was a must-win, his squad made good on the coach’s plea in dominating fashion over St. Louis FC, 2-0.

All facets of the Kickers gameplan came together, relying on St. Louis’ stamina to wane as a result of playing back-to-back road games.

After a scoreless 1st half, the Kickers hit another gear that the visitors just couldn’t reach.

Yudai Imura broke the tie in the 70th minute with a rocket into the top left corner, giving Richmond a one nothing lead.

Minutes later, substitute Matthew Delicate received a deep cross into the penalty box, overpowered his man and in one motion chipped the ball to Jason Yeisley who calmly headed the goal across the keeper to nail in the dagger.

The win is welcome for it’s playoff implications in a tightly contested USL Eastern conference, but it also is the first of a four game home stand.

The Kickers continue at City Stadium next week vs. Charleston Battery. The rivals have encountered each other two times this season, both draws.
