Virginia records second case of eastern equine encephalitis

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia has its second confirmed case of eastern equine encephalitis this year.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the 3-year-old Tennessee Walker mare from Chesapeake had been bought by the owner three weeks ago. The horse was euthanized Aug. 14 due to the severity of the illness. Its vaccination history is unknown. Lab results received Friday confirmed the illness.

The other case of eastern equine encephalitis this year also involved a horse from Chesapeake.

The disease has a mortality rate of 80 percent. Eastern equine encephalitis typically is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The state veterinarian encourages horse owners to work with their veterinarians to arrange a vaccination schedule.

Virginia had one reported case of encephalitis in a horse last year.
