HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) Local legend Janet Long, also known as the “Walmart walking lady” has been seen by most of the Huntington community when she walks to get her groceries and other goods at the store in town.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to fix her sidewalk and make a ramp at her house. According to the GoFundMe page, she has been having difficulty walking recently and has started to have some memory loss.
I’m sure by now every person in Huntington has seen the little old white haired lady that walks to Walmart, her name is Janet Long. She has been having more difficulty walking and having some memory loss. I think as good citizens and community we should take up a donation and fix her sidewalk and make a ramp for her to walk up to her house. She is a very dear sweet little old lady with few family. So here you go Huntington County, let’s HELP make it better for her as we all have seen her walking and tried to help or simply care for our community “grandmother”. — The GoFundMe page reads.
From looking at comments on Facebook and the fundraising page, most of the community knows Janet. Many have even given her rides when they see her walking.
One woman posted on the GoFundMe page that Janet has never driven in her life. She chooses to walk places not only because she loves walking, but also because she wants to stay in shape.
One comment even mentioned that Janet was once hit by a car. But, even that accident didn’t stop this “community grandmother” from stepping out to Walmart.
The goal is to raise $3,000. In less than 24 hours from when the campaign launched, more than half had already been raised.
The GoFundMe page was set up by Huntington resident, Todd Nightenhelser, who is also running for the 3rd District Congressional seat.
