WASHINGTON, D.C. (WRIC) — The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell can stay out of prison for now.
An order issued Monday says that prosecutors have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to file their response to McDonnell’s request to remain free while the Supreme Court decides whether or not to hear his case.
Just last week, Richmond’s 4th circuit court denied McDonnell’s request to remain free. Last September, McDonnell and his wife were both found guilty of public corruption.
McDonnell was sentenced earlier this year to two years in prison after a jury in September 2014 found the couple guilty of accepting more than $165,000 in loans and gifts — including a Rolex watch and designer clothing — in exchange for promoting a nutritional supplement marketed as a miracle cure by Star Scientific Inc.
