CHESTERFIELD Co., Va (WIRC) – The 102nd annual Chesterfield County fair kicked off Friday night. There are new rides and attractions, but organizers are most excited about new pavement.
“Before it was kind of like gravel dust,” said Brenda White, the general manager of the fair.
“Oh it was dusty and dirty and yucky. And when the wind blew you got dirt in your food,” said a visitor.
This year, the fair has new paving on the fairgrounds.
“To make it easier on our patrons, people with strollers or wheelchairs, or just people in general that need to walk. So we’re really proud of that, it helps keep the dust down,” said White.
“Oh I love it. My legs aren’t hurting like they usually be on the rocks,” said Chesterfield resident Joyce Jefferson.
“It’s a lot easier with little kids. They’re not as dirty,” said Adrien Poulos.
It’s a result of a partnership between the nonprofit fair association and the county. The two just signed a new 20-year lease.
In the next couple of years, White hopes to add new improvements to make sure everyone is not just comfortable, but safe. That includes adding new lighting.
“A new PA system, some more asphalting in different areas, maybe some permanent buildings, some bathrooms with showers actually,” said White.
Organizers expect a record 50,000 people will attend the 9-day event.
“With the new ground acts, and the paving and everything that we have, I think it’s going to be more attractive for people to come out,” said White.
