(WRIC) — For the first time in history, three Category 4 hurricanes formed in the Pacific Ocean at once on Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.
The weather event is being called a rare phenomenon, according to The Weather Channel.
At 11 p.m. Saturday, Hurricane Kilo was spotted southwest of the Hawaiian Islands followed by Hurricane Ignacio to the east of Hawaii and Hurricane Jimena in the eastern Pacific.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect as of now.
Kilo was the last of the three to reach Category 4, the second highest category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
This is the first recorded instance where three Category 4 hurricanes formed in the central and eastern Pacific basins at the same time.
The tropical activity in the Pacific can be attributed, in part, to “impressively warm ocean water.”
