ASHBURN, Va. (WRIC) — The storm currently on the doorstep of South Florida is much stronger than the one surrounding the Washington Redskins at the moment, but it’s still stirring up commotion.
Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden announced on Monday that Kirk Cousins, not Robert Griffin III, will be the team’s starting quarterback for the 2015 season.
Coach Gruden informed the team of the decision to start Cousins on September 13, according to the latest reports.
“It’s not so much what somebody didn’t do, it’s what Kirk has done…played so well he has earned the right,” Gruden said at a press conference on Monday.
Cousins has made 9 regular season starts for the Washington Redskins since the beginning of the 2013 season. Only one of those was a win, and it was thanks to a late comeback from fellow teammate Colt McCoy who relieved Cousins due to injury.
Cousins also has the worst turnover rate among 46 QBs with 500 snaps since 2013, per ESPN Stats & Information.
Gruden also said that Griffin is still in concussion protocol and that there’s been no determination on who is #2 and who is #3.
“Robert has done some great things,” Gruden said. “We have total faith in all three of them.”
The news comes a day after ESPN reports that Washington Redskins front office officials and coaches wish to part ways with RGIII, though Gruden did not comment on that on Monday.
Gruden described the situation as “a good problem to have.”
