HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A lightning strike sparked a fire at a home in the 2600 block of Gayton Grove Road in Henrico Wednesday evening.
Henrico Co. Fire units responded to the fire shortly before 8 p.m. and found smoke and fire coming from the attic.
Billy Lumpkin was home at the time, watching television, when he says it sounded like a bomb went off when his home was hit. He says, “I was laying in the bed, watching the Yankees try to finish off Boston, when all of a sudden… boom! I knew something was wrong. I saw a white flash, I said, that’s not good.”
Just last month, a home in Hanover was completely destroyed due to lightning.
And, in June lightning hit the attic of a home in Chesterfield while people inside were asleep.
Thankfully, due to a quick attack, damage was minimal and contained to the attic.
Strangely enough, this isn’t the first time Lumpkin has had a home struck by lightning.
He says, “In the last house, lightning struck the panel box in the shed and we had a major fire there. This time we don’t have any of that, thank GOD; we’re very fortunate.”
No one was injured, according to Captain Danny Rosenbaum with Henrico Fire, and the family will not be displaced.
