HOUSTON, Texas (WRIC/ABC) — Authorities in Texas are hoping to find relatives after a mother left her two young boys at a fire station.

The mother was arguing with the father of the 9-month-old and 2-year-old children near the fire station on Monday, when the father said he didn’t want the kids anymore, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The woman, who is the biological mother of the infant, but not the toddler, went to the fire station and told firefighters she was unable care for the children alone. Firefighters told her she could leave, but that she could not take the kids with her because of the state she was in. She left the children.

“They [the firefighters] saw that the children were under some duress so they wanted to make sure they were comforted so they had some stuffed animals on-site for them … they tried to make a very unpleasant situation as pleasant as possible,” Kenyatta Parker of the Houston Fire Department told ABC News.

When police and officials from Child Protective Services were called, they tracked down the mother for questioning. Their names have not been released.

Texas Safe Haven Laws, also known as Baby Moses Laws, allow parents to leave babies 60 days or younger at fire stations, hospitals or EMS stations. Neither child in the case fits that criteria. It’s unclear as of now whether the mother will face charges.
