RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police are investigating after two people were killed during a shooting in Richmond’s Mosby Court Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting took place in the 2100 block of Accommodation Street. Richmond Police confirm that two people are dead, but did not specify how many suspects they’re looking for or if any are in custody.
Police told 8News it is not clear whether the two victims shot each other or whether there is a third person involved.
Authorities are looking for a dark color sedan that eyewitnesses have seen in the neighborhood.
“Right now, we don’t know what the motive is. We have witnesses who said there was a dark sedan that came in the block firing shots, so we’re following on those right now,” said Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.
The police chief acknowledged that frustrated residents are cooperating with investigating detectives.
“Right now we have a lot of folks in the community who are fed up and we have a lot of people who are talking to our officers at this time that is very, very reassuring for us as police coming into the communities,” added Chief Durham.
Meanwhile, while the police knocked on doors, three local clergymen from different area churches were also on the scene trying to help the police by bringing a sense of calm in the neighborhood.
“Because it lets them know we’re coming together letting them know that they do have a future and they can get out of this situation,” stated Calvin Duncan, the pastor at Faith and Family Church.
In the meantime, the community plans a vigil in the neighborhood Friday evening. Richmond Police tell 8News the city is on par to last year’s murder rate of 27.
Cletisha Lovelace, a spokesperson for Richmond Public Schools, confirmed to 8News that four nearby schools — Fairfield Court Elementary, Armstrong High, Woodville Elementary and Martin Luther King Jr. — were all briefly operating under a precautionary lockdown. The lockdowns at all four schools have since been lifted.
Richmond Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
