RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — 8News has confirmed that Virginia will be outsourcing the lab work for untested rape kits sitting in police storage.
On Thursday, we learned that the Commonwealth was awarded a $1.4 million grant to test more than 2,000 rape kits for DNA. But with budgets slashed and staffing cut over the years, state labs do not have the manpower to handle the workload of the additional kits.
Any eligible samples the outside lab finds will be sent back to Virginia to be uploaded to state and national databases.
Attorney General Mark Herring says the grant money for the lab work can bring justice to victims and get sexual predators off the streets.
