RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Some very visible signs are indicating the UCI Road World Championships bike races are just around the corner. On Friday, workers were busy putting up platform and stands; they’re making room for a TV compound, a VIP tent, beer gardens, a finish line and jumbo-tron. Early in the evening, East Broad Street was closed between 3rd and 7th Streets.
The ‘No Parking’ signs are also going up and some merchants along East Broad are concerned.
“Not too thrilled about it, I mean it’s an exciting event I’m sure but it’s detrimental to businesses within the immediate area if you’re outside of the area it’s no big deal,” said John Goodman, owner of Friedman’s Loan Office, Inc. at 118 E. Broad.
Goodman told 8News some service businesses will probably do well during the races but not businesses that heavily rely on customers who drive and need a place to park.
“Restaurants and hotels will probably be doing great throughout this time, but as far as retail services, service type of business type services like we’re in I think it’s going to be more harm than great,” stated Goodman.
However, some businesses that rely on foot traffic are hopeful the bike races will be lucrative.
Brian Ashford, a barber at Harvey’s Barber Shop on East Broad said the possible inconvenience of not parking is still worth it giving Richmond international exposure.
“Being that Richmond is in the process of revitalizing itself in the downtown area any exposure is always good,” said Ashford.
Besides, Ashford is banking on the bike racers and spectators getting haircuts.
“Yes sir, yes sir, because think about it, bikers need haircuts too.” exclaimed Ashford.
