CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) – The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors decided Wednesday night to defer the vote on whether or not to install cameras on county school buses.

The vote comes with the condition that the school system conduct a second impact test, to compare to the original test done last May.

The county and law enforcement officials recently launched a school bus safety campaign releasing a few PSAs and videos.

Some of the supervisors believe this campaign may be enough to prevent drivers from breaking school bus laws.

The board plans on hearing from school officials with the study results, and hold a public meeting on its November 18 session.

The video cameras would catch and fine drivers who speed past stopped buses while kids are getting on or off. There is a petition going around Facebook allowing parents to voice their opinions about the bus camera proposal.

The cameras are supposed to pay for themselves with the money collected from citations, but supervisors have to pass an ordinance to allow that money to be collected. Otherwise, the plan cannot move forward.
