GOOCHLAND CO., Va. (WRIC) — A 36-year-old Richmond man is being treated for life-threatening injuries at VCU Medical Center following a single-vehicle accident on Route 288 in Goochland County Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 2:14 p.m., a special agent with Virginia State Police witnessed a 2006 GMC Yukon run off Route 288 near the Broad Street exit and strike a support pole for an overhead message board head-on.
The agent immediately rushed to help the driver, who was trapped inside the SUV. The crash resulted in the grass in the median to catch fire, which rapidly spread to the SUV. As flames quickly engulfed the vehicle, the agent and another citizen were able to pull the driver from the burning vehicle.
The driver, Raheim C. Watson of Richmond, was then flown by med-flight to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
