Former Petco workers charged in dog’s death to appear in court Wednesday

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (WRIC)- Two former Petco workers charged with animal cruelty are scheduled to appear in Chesterfield County court September 23 for a case that made national headlines.

Out of nowhere, Allison Marks lost her best friend in late spring.

“I’m still not past that hurt,” she said of the incident.

On September 23, for the first time she will see the two former employees charged in connection to her dog Colby’s death.

“Just to see them- the people that took Colby from me through their neglect and their carelessness- I do want them to pay for what they did,” Marks said.

31-year-old Suzanne Jensen and 28-year-old Rebecca Witherspoon both face animal neglect charges. Marks had dropped off her two-year-old golden retriever at the Westchester Commons Petco in Midlothian on May 29.

When she returned to pick him up she says she was told Colby had died from a heat stroke. Marks believes after Colby was groomed, he was left in a drying cage.

“It’s like losing a child.” Marks said, adding that she is anxious about the court hearing.

“It’ll just bring everything back to the day that it happened,” she explained. “If it can keep it from happening to somebody else’s dog, that’s a big plus.”

Petco maintained no heat was used to dry Colby, but did accept responsibility for his death. Both former employees are expected in Chesterfield County Court Wednesday morning.
