MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) – A state residential center for the disabled in Amherst County has laid off 81 workers as part of a shutdown plan.

The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services tells media outlets that Central Virginia Training Center gave 30-day layoff notices to 71 full-time and 10 part-time employees last week. Most of the affected employees are support staff.

The center in Madison Heights is scheduled to close in 2020 under a 2012 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to end the warehousing of disabled people.

A residential center in Petersburg closed in 2014. Another center in Fairfax is scheduled to close in 2016. The Southeastern Virginia Training Center in Chesapeake is expected to remain open.
