RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said Tuesday that his office will offer impartial police training across the state, giving officers tactics to safely deal with potential confrontations.
The move comes after riots erupted in Ferguson and Baltimore – all stemming from fatal encounters with officers. A.G. Herring said he thought about what could be done to prevent a community in Virginia from suffering the same fate.
The Attorney General says national studies show that minorities are at a greater risk of being pulled over, or arrested.
“What is it when we see the young African American male whose pants might be a little baggy, what is the first thing that we’re thinking about?” asked Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor.
Advocates say if officers can be trained to drop their biases, it will build trust and ultimately save lives.
“Our communities suffer when trust with our police officers erode,” said Herring.
