Tree falls through roof of local post

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Tree experts say all the rain from the recent weather will create conditions for trees to fall, “trees are much sturdier in drier ground, it’s like pulling weeds when the soil is damp the same thing with trees they go over easy when it’s very wet,” said Steve Flournoy, the owner of a tree company called C.S. Flournoy, Inc.

A local military veteran’s post experienced the effects of having a saturated ground as a huge tree, estimated to be more than 100-years-old, crashed through the roof of Maj. Charles A. Ransom American Legion Post 186 on Otterdale Road.

Members of the post said it was fortunate that one member was not in today because he usually sits where the tree crashed through.

“Everybody’s got their assigned seats so to speak and it’s an unwritten rule that it’s kind of in place and we sit around the big table which is positioned over there with all the damage is, one of the first guys who comes in he comes around 6 o’clock in the morning his name is John Clark he comes and sits in that spot,” said a relieved Post 186 Commander, Randy Lofland.

Lofland said the member who usually sits in the spot where the tree crashed was fortunately out having surgery.
