NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – There are a lot of things to remember to take care of as temperatures drop and seasons change. Plants are no exception.

Adam Chapman, a horticulture specialist and expert at Bates Nursery in Tennessee, offered advice on what to do about plants in the increasingly cold weather.

“Any kind of indoor plants that you might have set outside, [such as] Benjamin figs, or any kind of palms, or any kind of Boston fern, those kinds of things will be affected by cold temperatures. You’ll need to bring them back inside,” Chapman told 8News sister station WKRN.

He also said summer annuals will begin to die in the cold weather and “you’ll need to switch over to the cool season stuff.”

Chapman says flowers like mums, pansies and violas thrive in the cooler temperatures.

“You can do seasonal vegetables now like cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots,” Chapman continued. He recommended planting seedlings that have already had a little time to grow.

It’s not all bad news for the colder temps. The cooler weather means the beautiful colors of fall will start arriving. Chapman expects fall foliage to peak in the next one to two weeks.
