Apology issued after racist song plays before Glen Allen homecoming game

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Officials at Glen Allen High School in Henrico County are apologizing after a racist song was played over the football stadium’s P.A. System before their homecoming game Friday night.

The song, which contained a racially explicit phrase, was played over the loudspeaker as John Marshall High School’s varsity team warmed up on the field before Friday night’s game. Video from the incident has since circulated on social media.

Saturday, Glen Allen’s principal Gwen E. Miller issued an apology to John Marshall High School’s principal. The apology reads, in part:

“I learned today that an inappropriate song played during warm-ups at our varsity football game last night that contained racially explicit content that your community and our community, understandably, found offensive. I do not know how the song made it into the mix of tunes, and we are investigating to determine the source. We regularly review play lists, and I am at a loss as to how such a song was included. I was involved in pre-homecoming activities and did not hear the song; however, my athletic director heard the song and responded immediately.

“Please know this unfortunate incident does not reflect the broader Glen Allen High School community. We are a diverse and inclusive community and are appalled that the instigator of this event has sent a message contrary to our beliefs and practices.
“I do want to compliment your students and fans for their wonderful sportsmanship. After the game, the handshakes went well, and your band performed in an exemplary manner. They were full of joy after their win, and the Glen Allen fans enjoyed watching them celebrate.

“Please convey to your students and community my sincerest apologies and let them know that the Jaguars want them to feel welcome any time they play a game at Glen Allen High School. Let them know that the incident is not at all indicative of our student body that celebrates diversity. Once we determine the source of this unfortunate event, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.”

Richmond Schools has not commented on the incident.
