RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Picking apples at orchards has always been a favorite fall pastime.
8News has picked out eight great spots within a reasonable distance for apple picking in Central Virginia. Check out our list below.
(Note: You should always call ahead before travelling to any orchard to check their opening times.)
Location: 1435 Carters Mountain Trail, Charlottesville, Va. 22901
Carter’s Mountain is located about a half mile from Monticello, Michie Tavern and Ash Lawn. Here, you can check out scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Piedmont. The orchard has observation decks, picnic areas and a walking trail. It also features free hayrides on weekends and special activities every weekend in October. There’s even a senior citizen discount every Tuesday.

- Open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on 10/10, 10/17, and 10/24
- November 1 – November 29: Open Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: 1608 Russell Rd, Berryville, Va. 22611
Pick-your-own pumpkins and apples at the Mackintosh Fruit Farm. You can also grab lunch or stop in the market to buy apples, sunflowers, nectarines, grapes, blackberries and more.

Location: 2685 Dickie Road, Roseland, Va. 22967
You can pick your own fresh apples through October 30 at the Dickie family farm. More than 200 years old, Dickie Brothers Orchard is one of Virginia’s oldest farms continuously owned by the same family.

- October: Monday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- November 1 – 9: Monday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to – 5:00 p.m.
- November 10 – 30: Monday through Saturday from 10:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: 226 Tobacco Row Lane, Monroe, Va.
Morris Orchard is now open for apple season. The Pumpkin Patch is also ready for picking. We have a great selection of carving pumpkins, specialty and heirloom pumpkins, winter squash gourds and mini-pumpkins.

- Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: 1130 Drumheller Orchard Lane, Lovingston, Va. 22949
Enjoy some apple butter making, food, music, free cider samples, crafts, select-your-own apples or take a hayride to the pumpkin patch plus. Additionally, there are special activities for children. Other products at Drumheller’s include baskets, honey, cured hams and sorghum molasses.

Nichols Orchard — “The Apple Barn”
Location: 1124 Apple Orchard Lane, Troutville, Va. 24175
Pick-your-own and select-your-own apples at The Apple Barn in October until the harvest is completed.

- October: Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- November and December: Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

Visit Hollin Farms for the pumpkin patch, apples, fall greens, dig-your-own peanuts and potatoes

Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market
Location: 26002 Pear Orchard Road, Moseley, Va. 23120
They don’t have apples… but you can pick-your-own pumpkins, apples, cider, gourds, Indian corn and corn stalks throughout October at the Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market. Children of all ages are welcome to pick with parents. Some of the cool features here include hayrides to and from the strawberry field, a petting barn, snack bar and there’s a picnic area available. Picking and take home containers are provided free.
