PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Joseph Melvin will step down as superintendent of Petersburg schools at the end of the month.
The Petersburg City School Board unanimously voted on Wednesday to accept Melvin’s request to be released from his contract, effective October 31. The contract would have ended at the conclusion of the current school year on June 30, 2016.
According to a release, the school board and Dr. Melvin agree that this decision is in the best interest of the school division as it will allow Dr. Melvin to explore other professional opportunities while allowing the school board to immediately begin the search for a new superintendent.
“The school board made this decision after a great deal of discussion and deliberation,” school board Chairman Kenneth Pritchett said. “The board thanks Dr. Melvin for his service to Petersburg City Public Schools and the Petersburg community, and we wish him the best in the future.”
The school board said it will “soon” name an acting superintendent to lead the division until a permanent replacement is selected.
“Throughout this leadership transition, students will continue to remain our focus,” Pritchett said. “The school board, administration, principals, teachers and school staff members, working as a team, are committed to educating all children, maximizing their academic potential, developing skills for lifelong learning, and nurturing them to become successful contributors to society.”
