CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Brandermill family whose holiday decorations garnered national attention last year says there will be no bright lights on display this year.

For 19 years, thousands flocked to the home at 14309 Long Hill Road during the holiday season to see the renown display. No year was bigger than last, when the Bottoms’ family received the most votes in a USA Today national contest and saw their home voted as the best private holiday lights display in America.

But with the national attention also came controversy. The traffic from the thousands who would visit the neighborhood each day overwhelmed the usually quiet street and forced the Bottoms to shut the lights off weeks earlier than planned.

“Unfortunately my family and I have decided to take a break from the Christmas lights this year,” Hunter Bottoms said. “We’ve enjoyed every smile we have made over the years, but think it’s time to give ourselves and our community a break. Please spread the word for us, we don’t want anyone to drive to our home and be disappointed.”
