ROANOKE, Va. (WRIC/CNN) — The television news reporter and photojournalist shot to death while on air earlier this year have received one of broadcast journalism’s top honors.

Their colleagues presented posthumous Emmy awards to the families of Alison Parker and Adam Ward. Both received the special “Ted Yates Award” Emmy statuette from the Washington, D.C. area chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts And Sciences.

A third Emmy was given to the staff of WDBJ-TV in Roanoke for “showing courage in the face of tragedy.”

In August, Parker and Ward were killed by a former co-worker who ambushed them during a live morning news segment.
