Chesterfield family ‘heartbroken’ after cat shot with pellet gun

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) —  A Chesterfield family’s cat was shot at point blank range with a pellet gun recently, and we’re learning that more than one person may have been behind the trigger.

“We found him at 9 o’clock Sunday night under a bush and he would not move,” said Michelle Langford, the cat’s owner.

Tyrion, the Langford’s 2-year-old cat, is usually an indoor cat. But Sunday morning, Tyrion snuck away. Hours later, the family made the gruesome discovery.

“We had to go in and grab him, I was scared to even pick him up because he looked really rough, I mean his eye was almost coming out,” Langford said.

At first they thought the cat had just been in a fight, but after they rushed  him to the animal hospital they learned this wasn’t caused by a fight, but rather a pellet gun.

“The pellet had entered the corner of the eye and had actually gone through the eyeball and ruptured the eyeball,” Langford explained. “So they removed his eye, then the other pellet went though the ear where you can see a mark right here. And then the third pellet was in the back leg.”

The pellets found were two different typed of pellets. According to Langford, the vet believes this means there were two different guns used, meaning possibly two people both unloaded on Tyrion.

“The way the pellets entered, at the angles they entered it was done close range and he was probably looking up at the shooter. So yeah it’s heart breaking to think he went up to some body to get some attention and get pet and they shot him in the head,” said Langford.

The veterinarian’s couldn’t remove the pellets from the cats head without causing more damage, meaning the pellets are still inside and there is a risk for infection. Meanwhile, police are investigating and Langford has a message for those responsible.

“I just hope they wouldn’t do it again.I mean its cruel enough to do it to any animal but this is somebody’s pet,” said Langford.
