CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A school bus overturned in Caroline County Friday afternoon, leaving 28 students injured. None of the injuries are life-threatening, but five are considered serious. According to the Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa, the crash occurred after a student driving an SUV tried to beat the bus across an intersection but instead struck it.
Students were sent to Mary Washington Healthcare, VCU Medical Center and the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.
Police say the incident occurred near Caroline County High on Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard).
School officials tell us 40 students were on the bus.
A parent at the scene told 8News reporter Matthew McClellan that an altercation occurred shortly before the bus was side-swiped by another vehicle.
