INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Facebook is looking to improve its “real names” policy.
Right now, Facebook users have to verify their name on Facebook. They do not have to use their real names, but they must use the name that they use in real-life.
Facebook wants to simplify this process. It’s now testing new ways to make it easier for people to prove their identification.
In a letter sent to organizations, Facebook executive Alex Schultz said the changes in the identification process should begin in December.
“We want to reduce the number of people who are asked to verify their name on Facebook, when they are already using the name people know them by … (and) we want to make it easier for people to confirm their name if necessary,” Schultz said.
The ACLU, EFF, and many others have reached out to Facebook asking to change their identify requirements. They are requesting the change because some users may face harassment if forced to use their legal name.
Those who confirm their identity without government-issued IDs will have to explain their situation to Facebook. Also, those who report a user is using false identification are being asked to provide evidence as to why they are making the report.
Schultz said Facebook wants to minimize bullying but maximize people to be their true authentic self on Facebook.
