RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond leaders have big plans for the Intermediate Terminal Project known as the Sugar Pad.
The parcel sits off East Main Street and Wharf by the James River.
The park renderings released Thursday include a beer garden for the coming Stone Brewing restaurant and bike amenities for the Virginia Capital Trail. The draft plan also has a community pavilion, event lawn, tidal pools and a fishing area.
Some residents had been worried the city was going to tear down the sugar pad and say they are excited for the news.
“It’s just a very beautiful spot. it happens to be right in the middle of the view from Libby Hill which gave us the name of Richmond, so it’s been an under-appreciated place for a long time,” said Rick Tatnall with Replenish Richmond.
“It’s great to see movement on the downriver section of the Riverfront Plan. We’re excited to see more public access coming to Richmond’s riverfront,” added Justin Doyle with the James River Association.
The city will hold public meetings starting in mid January.
