WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – A week after terrorists launched multiple attacks against the French people, the issue of homeland security and the debate over the United States response to ISIS is taking center stage in the race for the White House.
Trump stays on top
A new poll, released on Thursday, indicates GOP primary voters have not shifted their opinions about who should become the nominee, despite the attacks in Paris. Among registered Republican voters the leaderboard remains relatively unchanged: Trump (24%), Carson (20%), Rubio (12%), Cruz (9%), and Bush (6%).
Candidates hit the stump
Within the last week, several candidates have switched their stump speeches to focus on the controversy surrounding Syrian refugees resettling in the United States. On Thursday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton previewed what voters could expect from her administration in the fight against ISIS. “We should be honest about the fact that to be successful, airstrikes will have to be combined with ground forces actually taking back more territory from ISIS,” said Mrs. Clinton during a speech in New York.
Campaigns see blood in the water over Trump comments
A new controversy sent Donald Trump’s campaign back to the drawing board after the billionaire businessman suggested a database to keep track of Muslim Americans. Several candidates quickly lashed out at the proposal and it didn’t take long for the Trump campaign to clarify his ideas.
The comments are expected to be widely discussed on Sunday morning when GOP Presidential hopeful Ohio Gov. John Kasich will be interviewed on NBC’s Meet the Press. Ben Carson, who’s also facing criticism for comments surrounding Syrian refugees, will be interviewed on ABC’s This Week.
