8News Daily Poll: Has the State Department’s travel warning altered your holiday travel plans?

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC/AP) — A series of terror attacks around the world, including in Paris, Egypt and Mali, have prompted the U.S. State Department to issue a alert for those who are traveling.

A travel alert issued Monday says that current information suggests that Islamic State militants, al-Qaida, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in multiple regions. U.S. authorities say the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of IS return from Syria and Iraq, and others not affiliated with terror groups engage in violence on their own.

Extremists have attacked in France, Nigeria, Denmark, Turkey and Mali and IS has claimed responsibility for bombing a Russian airliner in Egypt.

Some Richmond residents told 8News they may change their holiday travel plans after hearing about the alert.

“We should take it seriously, because there’s a reason why [State Department officials] say it,” said Inez Williams. “Sometimes it’s something they may know that’s going on behind the scenes that we don’t know.”
