RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — This morning, volunteers will be delivering 900 Thanksgiving meals to people in our community through FeedMore’s Meals on Wheels program.
Volunteers have been working to get everything ready for today’s big delivery and Kroger is stepping in to help out.
The grocery chain donated all the money to make the Thanksgiving meals happen. The feast will include turkey, cornbread stuffing, pumpkin pie and more.
Kroger’s donation helped FeedMore save nearly $3,000. That money will help them continue to feed seniors, children, and families in Richmond and the Tri-Cities.
Katie Jantzi is FeedMore’s director of senior feeding programs. She says many of the people on the receiving end aren’t able to put together their own Thanksgiving feast or don’t have any relatives in the area to celebrate with.
“So it’s really nice for them to know that someone is thinking about them, that someone is paying attention and wants to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving,” said Jantzi.

Jantzi says volunteers are the “backbone” of what they do.
“We’re really committed to delivering more than a meal to our clients,” she said.
Mike Sarahan has been a volunteer driver for more than a year now. Now that he’s retired, he makes deliveries each day.
“It’s a club, it’s a family. We really enjoy doing it and it’s also important to help people on the other end,” said Sarahan.
Sarahan says he’s built relationships with the people on his route.
“They’re very grateful and they always say that. They tell you how grateful they are. They mean it.”
And Kroger and FeedMore are grateful for the volunteers who give up their time to help others.
Kroger is giving volunteers gas cards today to help cover the cost of delivery. Meals on Wheels drivers use their own vehicles and gas to drop off food to clients.
