RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred overnight on the city’s south side.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., a Richmond officer was flagged down by a person who had heard a gunshot fired in the Southwood Apartments complex. The officer quickly found the body of an adult Hispanic male lying in a drainage ditch in the 4600 block of Southwood Parkway.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of his death.

The victim’s identity will be released once next of kin have been notified.

Rahlee Perry told 8News he heard the shots being fired. “We just hear ‘pow pow pow pow pow,’ and everybody’s shocked, like ‘What’s going on?'”

Perry described the area as being home to many families with small children. “It’s definitely a scary reaction for all the little ones and all the people that have kids,” he said.

Neighbors said they were anxiously waiting for police to make an arrest in this case. “I’m hope they find (the suspect) because there are kids outside playing,” neighbor Keiana Harris told 8News.

Anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation is asked to call Detective Michael Gouldman at (804) 512-2950 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens may also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
