1st officer on trial Monday in Freddie Gray death case

BALTIMORE, Md. (WRIC) — The trial for Officer William Porter, one of six Baltimore City Police Officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray begins Monday.

Porter is charged with assault, manslaughter, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment.

Gray’s death from a severed spine, while in police custody, sparked outrage and led to violent protests, vandalism and looting.

Gray was not wearing a seatbelt when he was injured in the back of a police van.

Jurors, who will not be sequestered, will have the opportunity to see the vehicle that Gray was transported in.
