HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Henrico neighborhood is fighting to stop a cancer treatment center from building in their area.
The proposed facility would force developers to tear down a wooded area that backs up to a number of backyards.
“It’s going to be an eyesore,” maintains Jeff Greves. “I don’t want to wake up in the morning and see a four story building.”
Greves’ home on Woodley Road backs up to the proposed hospital.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but we’re going to fight it as long as we can,”he insists.
HCA Virginia is behind the plan to build the cancer treatment center next door to its hospital on Skipwith Road. There is already an agreement to buy the unused land from the county school district.
That’s not sitting well with Carmel Miney, who has lived in the neighborhood for 50 years. Ironically, Miney is being treated for cancer by doctors at the health care group she is now fighting.
“To have a parking lot with 550 cars and a 4 story building in its place, it’s just not desirable at all,” Miney explains.
Residents of the Tuckahoe Hills Subdivison aren’t just worried about the view. They’re concerned about the extra traffic that could come with a new facility.
HCA released a statement insisting that “we strive to be good neighbors” and that to ease effects on homeowners, plans include a “landscape buffer that extends four times beyond the recommended measurements.”
In order for this proposal to move forward, the hospital has to convince the county to rezone the property. Henrico’s planning commission is expected to vote on the issue sometime after the first of the year.
