MIAMI, FL (WRIC) — Virginia’s season continues to be full of missed opportunities. Wednesday, sources close to the University Miami confirmed the former Georgia Bulldogs football head coach Mark Richt will become the new Miami Hurricanes head coach.

Richt reportedly had been in Charlottesville during the afternoon to interview for the vacant head coaching position at the University of Virginia. Other reports claim Mark Richt never visited Charlottesville, instead was finalizing a deal with Miami despite considering the opening for the Cavaliers football program.

The 55 year old Mark Richt is one of the winningest coaches (145-51 at Georgia), currently in college football. He won two SEC championships in five conference title game appearances. This season, Richt coached Georgia to a 9-3 record, winning four straight games to end the season. Despite the impressive record, he was let go by the University of Georgia immediately following their final game against Georgia Tech, a 13-7 victory.

Richt is a University of Miami alumnus, playing backup quarterback to the famous Jim Kelly and under Howard Schnellenberger.

Mark Richt will be the 23rd head coach in history for the Hurricanes football program.

Virginia now must regroup and look for their next candidate to replace Mike London, who formally resigned as head coach of the Cavaliers Sunday, Nov. 29th.
