EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) – Emporia Police responded to the 700 block of Main St. at the Smoove Operators Nightclub early Sunday morning after reports of shooting. When they arrived, police were told that, 22-year-old George Cain III was transported by a bystander to the hospital. Cain later died at the hospital from his injuries. As police were gathering information, an employee of the nightclub pointed out a suspect.
The Emporia Police Chief says as police officer, William King, was taking that suspect into custody, shots rang out from a gunman near the incident striking Officer King. He was transported by med-flight to VCU where he is currently listed in stable condition. A State Police officer was credited with saving the Emporia Police officer life by his quick actions in applying a tourniquet.
The gunman that shot the police officer is still on the run and police are asking anyone with information to please call Emporia Crime Line at 434-634-1111.
