EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) — The U.S. Marshals office announced Monday that one of two suspects wanted in connected to the shooting of an Emporia police offer at a nightclub last weekend is in custody.
Last week, authorities issued warrants for the arrest of 25-year-old Rakei Stokes of the 200 Block of West End Boulevard and 24-year-old Calvin Evans of the 300 Block of West End Boulevard in connection with the murder of 22-year-old George Cain III and attempted murder of Emporia Police Officer William King. Evans turned himself in a few hours later.

Police say that Stokes was located and arrested early Sunday morning in Richmond. He was taken into custody and incarcerated at Southside Regional Jail without bond. Stokes is being charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit capital murder, unlawful shooting and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In the early-morning hours of Sunday, December 6, officers responded to the 700 block of Main St. at the Smoove Operators Nightclub for reports of shooting. When they arrived, police were told that 22-year-old Can had been shot and was transported to the hospital by a bystander. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.
As Officer William King was taking the suspect involved in Cain’s shooting death into custody, police told 8News that shots rang out from a gunman near the incident. Officer King was struck by the gunfire. He was transported by med-flight to VCU Medical Center. Officer King was released from the hospital on December 9
“This case has been an excellent example of the cooperative efforts of the Emporia Police Department, Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshal Service,” Emporia Police Chief Ricky Pinkshaw said in a release. “The family of George Cain III continues to be in our prayers.”
