POWHATAN CO., Va. (WRIC) — A suspect is in custody after he led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a deadly wreck in Powhatan County on Tuesday.
Virginia State Police tell 8News they received reports of a Chevrolet Tahoe driving recklessly in the Cumberland Courthosue area. A trooper later observed the reported vehicle driving 79 mph in a 35 mph zone. When the trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, the vehicle refused to stop and continued traveling at a high rate of speed. As the pursuit entered Powhatan County heading east on Route 60, the vehicle made an abrupt lane change to the right and struck a 2009 Kia.
The two occupants of the vehicle were transported via med-flight to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. One of them died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Tahoe was not arrested and taken into custody.
The incident remains under investigation.
