RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — This could be the busiest weekend at the theaters in the history of movies.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ hits screens today, but it’s not the only new movie. Here’s a look at what’s new at the box office:
Unless you’ve been trapped in a crevasse on the planet Hoth, you know today is the day that ‘the Force Awakens’ is in theaters. This is the seventh entry in the saga, finds Han, Leia and Luke — played again by Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill — 30 years after return of the Jedi ended. They face a new threat from Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, who is attempting to resurrect the dark side. John Boyega is a disillusioned Storm Trooper and Daisy Ridley is Rey. The film also costars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and is directed by JJ Abrams. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is rated PG13.
In ‘Sisters,’ superpals Amy Poehler and Tina Fey play grown siblings who reunite in the old family home as their parents are about to put it up for sale. They are polar opposites but decide to throw one more big party at their childhood home. The comedy, being billed as ‘The Farce Awakens’ costars Maya Rudolph and James Brolin. The movie is rated R.
‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ are back for yet another adventure: ‘The Road Chip.’ This time around they’re trying to derail their producer Dave’s plans to propose to his girlfriend in Florida. They take a wacky road trip to try and stop it. The film stars Jason Lee, Kimberly Williams Paisley and Anna Faris. It’s rated G.
