CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you’re still in the spirit of giving for the holiday season, there are ways to make sure your gift is going to a legitimate charity. Americans gave an estimated $358-billion last year.

Before you donate:

  • Make sure the organization’s phone number, address are valid
  • Find out specifically where the money will go, and how it’ll be spent
  • There’s always the option to donate your time to avoid schemes

Kendra Woolridge of Springfield told 22News, “I like to actually experience it. I like to deal with people instead of hearing about it and being concerned where the money’s going. I’d rather see where it goes, and see the people that I’m helping out.”

Donors should be skeptical of unexpected calls from telemarketers who pressure you into donating.

  • Look out for sound-alike names that closely resemble other organizations
  • Be suspicious of website links in text messages or e-mails
  • Ignore requests for checks made payable to a person rather than a charity

If you’re ever unsure whether a charity is legitimate, you can use a watchdog websiteto double check before you donate.
