HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — One man is dead and another was injured after a shooting near Davisville Apartments in Hopewell Saturday afternoon.
The victim, Jeramyah Dontay Pierce, age 18 of Prince George County, was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to his neck. A second gunshot victim arrived at John Randolph Medical Center by way of a private vehicle. He was transported to VCU Medical Center and is in critical but stable condition. His name is not being released at this time.
Police say that a white Dodge pickup truck, a newer model, 4-door crew cab, was seen leaving the area just after the shooting. A preliminary investigation shows that there was some type of altercation just before the shooting occurred, and there were several witnesses in the area at the time.
“The jostling started, and the next thing we knew we see a couple people running. And then the guns came out, and we hear the gunshots,” an eyewitness told 8News. The man asked to remain anonymous. He also said residents were relieved their young children did not see the shooting.
“Normally at that time kids would be out there playing. But since it was raining the kids were inside their house,” he said.
As police ask witnesses to come forward in the murder investigation, neighbors described a sense of fear, anger and grief the day after Christmas.
“It’s sad, very sad,” the man said. “This is right at Christmas. That really takes the Christmas spirit out.”
