RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is seeking volunteers to help restore underwater grasses to the estuary.

The foundation says volunteers can grow the grasses in their homes, schools or businesses to start, then they’re transplanted in the spring in the James and Potomac rivers.

Underwater grasses are vital to the ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay, but pollution has depleted them over the years.

The foundation is sponsoring workshops in early 2016 for volunteers who want to join the “Grasses for the Masses” campaign.

The first workshop is Jan. 28 in Richmond. Others are planned in Hampton Roads and northern Virginia.
