12-year-old fatally shot in Richmond laid to rest Monday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A’Miya Moses was laid to rest on Monday.

12-year-old A’Miya was visiting a friend when she was struck by a stray bullet in Richmond on Saturday, December 19 in the 4900 block of Old Brook Road. She later died at the hospital. A’Miya was in the sixth grade and just celebrated a birthday a few weeks ago.

“It’s like a nightmare — it’s like a terrible, terrible nightmare. I just want to wake up and I look over and my daughter is laying next to me,” said Kele Wright, Amiya’s mother.

Since A’Miya’s death, the community has honored her memory by coming together last week for a vigil. The Ricky Johnson and Friends group, along with local businesses, held a toy drive there. Dozens of local coaches also organized an anti-violence march.

Today’s private memorial ceremony was held at Mimms Funeral Home.

Police say the shooting in which A’miya was killed stemmed from a neighborhood dispute two days prior, which had nothing to do with the young girl. Two suspects were arrested and charged in connection to the shooting within 24 hours.

Dwight Q. Jackson and Shaquille D. Maxwell, both 20, were taken into custody Sunday night by the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force. Maxwell was due in court this morning and will appear again on January 26. Jackson is also expected in court on January 26.
