RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In the beginning of December, 30 Pizza Huts across Richmond started collecting food donations at their restaurants. As people came in to pickup their pizzas, they started to leave something behind.
“As our customers came in and were waiting for their carry-out they were like wow, they are actually giving donations here, so they started coming back and actually filling those boxes up for us,” says Mike Smith, who manages a local Pizza Hut in Richmond.
At the end of the collection, Good Samaritans donated 650 pounds of food to feed the hungry during the holidays.
“That’s the thing, our community can be really great and all we really need to do is just reach out to the actual folks living in our community,” says Smith.
The donations went to FeedMore to help people in need. The non profit says one in seven people in Central Virginia doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from.
“It surprises a lot of people and a lot of people don’t realize just how close to home it is. It’s in our back yards. People think of the city, but it’s in Henrico, it’s in Hanover, it’s in Chesterfield,” says Christy Dalton, FeedMore’s community events manager.
The donations will feed more than 500 people. For the folks at Pizza Hut, it’s never too early to start planning for next Christmas.
“I think what we will probably do is start it even earlier next year, because we didn’t really start it until the beginning of December, but I think if we start it in November, we can get even more,” says Smith.
