RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The TSA tweeted a photo today from Richmond International Airport of a traveler carrying $75,000 on board, but many of you say this is a violation of privacy.
We asked our legal expert Russ Stone if it is illegal to carry $75,000 dollars in cash on a plane.
“It is not, the fact of the matter is if you want to carry your money in that fashion it is legal to do so,” said Stone.
So not illegal, but a TSA worker posted a picture of the money, in someone’s personal luggage on Twitter, and many of you tweeted your outrage.
“It’s absolutely appalling that you’re posting photos of private citizen’s belongings. You & your agency should be ashamed,” said one Twitter user.
“Now that the public knows the exact design, color, and size of this bag and also its contents, how is this traveler safer,” asked another Twitter user.
So was posting the photo illegal?
“I don’t think there is anything illegal in taking the photo, it could be and what would be interesting to look would be the regulations of the TSA and whether or not they are allowed to take photos of that nature,” said Stone.
8News reached out to the TSA to see if this was against their policy, we have not heard back but the agent who posted the photo and identifies herself as a TSA Spokesperson on twitter did reply to some twitter users where she says: “TSA didn’t seize/confiscate/take it. It alarmed the x-ray machine as an unknown and we spotted it. It’s just a curiosity.”
She also confirmed that the money is “not on the prohibited items list.”
